Itinerary
DAY 1: CUSCO / CACHORA / CHIQUISCA:
We leave Cusco early in the morning. Our private transportation will take us to Cachora town, where our muleteers and mules will be waiting for us. We will walk for about 6 hours, going down the Apurimac canyon until Chiquisca to 1800 meters above sea level where we will camp. (L, D).
DAY 2: CHIQUISCA / MARANPATA / CHOQUEQUIRAO:
After a tasty breakfast, we will begin our walk towards the river and after crossing the bridge, for about 5 hours until arriving to Maranpata where we will eat lunch and after a couple of hours more we will arrive to Choquequirau where we will camp. The Name Choquequirau means "Cradle of Gold", and this citadel is considered as sister of Machupicchu because of their similarities. Choquequirau is 1500 meters above Apurimac River, and Machupicchu is in similar latitude above Urubamba River. It was an administrative and religious center. It covers more than 8 hectares and just a third had been discovered and every day the archaeologists discover more. (B, L, D).
DAY 3: CHOQUEQUIRAU / MAIZAL:We will leave early after a walk around the ruins and we will leave for the back part, walking by a humid forest until the step of Choquequirao. Then we will continue for some terraces called Pinchiyoc which means “where the water jumps”. These terraces have some curious rituals sources. Probably people cultivated in time of the Incas over there to provide food to the citadel.
We will continue toward Rio Blanco where we will eat lunch. Later we will go down to a interandean valley toward Maizal where we will camp. (B, L, D).
DAY 4: MAIZAL / YANAMA:
This day we will leave early and will walk around the Snows of Corihuarachina, important because archaeological remains have been found there, as Inca canals. Then we will go through the step of Victoria Mines where in Colony time Spaniards extracted silver. Continuing towards the spectacular Yanama Valley under the shade of the Snows of Pumasillo where we will camp. (B, L, D).
DAY 5: YANAMA / TOTORA:
After a tasty breakfast, we will satrt to walk where we are surrounded by the beautiful mountains of the Mountain range of Vilcabamba, ascending toward the step of Yanama, the highest of our walk. In the afternoon we go dawn along a river to Totora town , where there is an exquisite tranquility and pure air surrounded by the Snows of Salcantay, Pumasillo and Padreyoc. We will camp. (B, L, D).
DAY 6: TOTORA / WIÑAYPOCO:
We leave early and we go along Totora River, then we will enter to a tropical humid forest going by another town in Lluscamayo and arriving to Colcapampa, known by their thermal waters. Then the route continuous for the left flank of Santa Teresa River where we will see bananas, granadillas, cocoa, coffee and other plantations. Later we will arrive to a natural grasses plain, where we will camp. (B, L, D).
DAY 7: WIÑAYPOCO / PALTALLACTA:
Early in the morning we go along Santa Teresa River, going by bananas, granadillas, cocoa and cafe plantations. Then we will cross to the other side of the river and we will ascend through the humid forest to the step of Puncuyuc, later we will descend to our camp in Platallacta.
The panoramic view is spectacular, because we will see the back part of Sanctuario of MachuPicchu and from a different angle. (B, L, D).
DAY 8: PALTALLACTA / AGUAS CALIENTES:
Today we will descend through a flowers and orchids way until Aobamba River, later we will cross a metallic bridge near the Hydroelectric. Then we arrive to the train lines where we can wait the arrival of the train that will take us to Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night in a hotel and we will relax ourselves into the thermal waters. (B, L).
DAY 9: MACHUPICCHU / CUSCO:
Early in the morning we will ascend by bus towards the Sanctuary of MachuPicchu, to have a guided visit of this wonder of the world. In the afternoon we will take the back train to Cusco.
