Nacional Park of Manu 4 Days / 3 Nights
Itinerary
DAY 01: We´ll leave Cusco early in the morning and on the way, we´ll visit the interesting pre-Incan tombs of Ninamarca, the colonial town of Paucartambo and then, we´ll go down to the cloud forest. There, a thick cloak of clouds provides constant moisture and makes it an ideal habitat for epiphytic plants such as bromeliads. This varied and fascinating world is home of the cock of the rocks, spectacled bear, orchids, tree ferns (one of the world´s oldest living plants) mosses and lichens, as at least 50% of the plant species found there are endemic to the region. Overnight stay at the Orquídeas San Pedro Lodge.
DAY 2: Early in the morning, we´ll have a chance to observe from a platform, the spectacular mating ritual dance of Peru´s national bird; the cock of the rocks (Rupícola peruviana). After breakfast, we´ll go on a bus ride down the narrow road among waterfalls and canyons, to get to the town of Pilcopata. After 30 minutes, we´ll arrive at the fluvial port of Atalaya, to climb on board our roofed motorized boat and head down the Alto Madre de Dios River for about 30 minutes to “Erika Lodge” and private natural reserve, where we´ll spend the next two nights. After settling there, we´ll take a short walk around the lodge.
Option 1: We can cycle downhill on mountain bikes from the Orquideas San Pedro Lodge (1,700 m.a.s.l.), in the cloud forest to pilcopata, in the high jungle (700 m.a.s.l.).
Option 2: We can go on a 3 hour rafting trip down the Ccosñipata River with the opportunity for a dip and of course, to enjoy the spectacular view of the Koñeq Canyon, as we´ll navigate down the Alto Madre de Dios river, on our way to “Erika Lodge”.
DAY 3: The great diversity of wildlife around the lodge is due to this beautiful site´s wide altitude range. Immediately after breakfast, we´ll start walking and our guide will tell us about insects, medicinal plants, trees, reptiles, mammals, etc. Before returning for lunch, we might have a chance to swim in the clear water of natural pools in a stream, close to the lodge.
Early in the afternoon, we´ll have a short boat ride to visit a small lake near the Alto Madre de Dios River. There, we´ll have the opportunity to see the hoatzin; a primitive bird, caimans, many species of birds, insects, etc. This will be our last night in the wonderful Amazonian jungle. Overnight stay at the lodge.
Optional jungle canopy tour: We´ll slide from tree to tree and platform to platform, using pulleys on horizontal transversal cables stretched across the treetops in the tropical rainforest´s canopy and over the trails, far below. Expert guides will assist you during this exciting journey through the different layers of the virgin rain forest and will explain what’s going on around you, from the moment you leave the ground, all the way ´till you´ll rappel back down to the forest´s floor.
DAY 4: Early wake up to board our boat and after a five minute ride, we´ll get to a small “Collpa”, which is a cliff of clay on the riverbank, where many species of parrots feed on minerals and salt supplements to their daily diet of seeds and fruit. After this colorful and noisy show, we´ll go on by boat to the Port of Atalaya, where we´ll take the bus back to Cusco, arriving there late in the afternoon. End of our services.
